Unsaturated Shear Strength Characteristics of Nakdong River Sand and Clay

Abstract

The shear strength characteristics of an unsaturated earth material are highly important not only for evaluating the seepage characteristics but also the stability of levee for a lifelong. In this study, unsaturated strength characteristics of Nak-dong river sand and clay that frequently used for the levee construction in southern province of Korea were analyzed using unsaturated triaxial compressive test. The strength characteristics due to the variation of matric suction were analyzed using multi-stage compression technique and the results were directly compared with the non-linear formulation for the apparent cohesion (Cmax), and the friction component φb were determined and evaluated from the test for the application of linear Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria. Cohesion and friction characteristics of the unsaturated levee material under various suction phases were also explored during this study.

불포화토의 전단특성 평가는 제방구조물의 안정성과 투수특성 평가에 매우 중요한 요소이다. 본 연구에서는 국내 낙동강 유역에서 제방 제체재료로 사용되는 모래, 점토에 대한 불포화 전단특성을 평가하기 위해 불포화 삼축시험을 수행하였다. 모관흡수력에 따른 불포화강도변화를 살펴보기 위해 다단계실험방법을 적용하였으며, 그 결과를 바탕으로 비선형성을 고려한 겉보기 점착력(Cmax)에 맞추어 비교 분석하였다. 또한 실험결과를 바탕으로 선형적인 강도를 나타내는 Mohr-Columb 파괴강도를 활용할 수 있는 평균적인 φb 값을 산출하였다.
